In this series of lessons, Rich Schroeder will be teaching you about the different methods of playing a banjo and when and where they originated from.

You will learn how to play in a three finger picking style, how to perform rolls and most importantly how to implement them in a song.

  Lesson 1 - The Banjo
Lesson 1 - The Banjo

In this first lesson, Rich will introduce you to the banjo by giving you a brief history of the instrument, explaining the individual parts of the banjo and tuning your instrument.

He will explain about the three finger picking style and it's origin and drone strings.

Lesson 2 - Chords

Rich stresses the importance of learning correctly and emphasises the fact that he will be teaching you in the style he was taught.

In this lesson Rich will be teaching you the three chords G, C and D.

You will be using the chords learnt to play the song You are my Sunshine.

Rich will now teach you about finger picks and thumb picks and how to use them to pick individual strings when playing.

You will be using this technique when playing to create rolls, shown by Rich during this lesson, to develop the songs you will play and elaborate on the chords you have learned.

Lesson 4 - Thumb in-and-out Roll

Continuing from the previous lesson on rolls, Rich will now demonstrate a thumb in-and-out roll.

Using the additional materials provided, you should be practising when and where to add rolls into songs you have learned and alongside the chords you have been taught.

Musical Background:

Richard Schroeder began learning the Banjo from very traditional players, though quickly learned that when playing the Banjo it was important that you developed a style of playing that was unique to yourself.

Since then he has gone on to create a very progressive method. He emerged at the forefront of the Newgrass Movement, with his band The Monroe Doctrine, in the 70’s.

Not long after this, he fell under the influence of the great swing fiddler, Johnny Gimble, and quickly became nationally renowned, playing with the likes of Hylo Brown and Bill Monroe.

Teaching Experience:

Richard is an experienced Bluegrass and Jazz Banjo player. His unique approach to learning banjo stresses ear training with a healthy dose of music theory.

Genres:

Richard can teach anything, but is especially proficient in Bluegrass and Blues standards.
